Sisuk

Sisuk

Sisuk left Laos in 1978 for Thailand, where he wandered for thirty years as a refugee then construction worker. In his early twenties, he had a chance to learn to build temples with cement decoration. After that he occasionnaly participated in painting murals in Thai temples.

His first encounter with pottery was in Champasak last year. Motivated by his fast progress Sisuk enjoys his every-day work at the studio. He is free to experiment modelling statues, making pots of any shape and decorating them with carving or appliqué. For economic and technical reasons he's limited to low firing using sawdust, buffalo dung and rice husk. Most of his work is burnished and comes out shiny black with a stone-like finish.
